THE ROAD AHEAD: TOYOTA AND THE IUCN RED LIST OF THREATENED SPECIES PARTNERING WITH BIRDLIFE INTERNATIONAL AND CONSERVATION INTERNATIONALTO ACHIEVE AICHI TARGETS AND SDG DELIVERY

 

Improved knowledge of species that are crucial to food security will support the delivery of several Aichi targets and implementation of the SDGs, particularly the Zero Hunger Goal. This side event will describe ongoing work to advance our understanding of the extinction risk faced by such species, including wild relatives of crops and freshwater and marine fish.

 

Toyota will explain how this work contributes to the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, which embraces not only biodiversity conservation but also climate change as two sides of the same coin. The event will also cover Toyota’s environmental sustainability work in North America, including Mexico, and the work of the corporation’s partners in Mexico.

 

The event will showcase the importance of working with the private sector to achieve sustainable development underpinned by biodiversity conservation. Toyota plans to hand over car keys to BirdLife International and Conservation International, which undertake IUCN Red List’s assessment and field research work and conservation activities. 

 

Speakers include Dr. Jane Smart, Global Director, IUCN Biodiversity Conservation Group; Mr. Kevin Butt, General Manager, Regional Environmental Sustainability Director, Toyota Motor North America; Ms. Melanie Heath, Director of Science, Policy & Information, BirdLife International; Mr. Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, Vice-President for Conservation Policy, Conservation International; Mr. Hesiquio Benitez Diaz, Director General, International Cooperation and Implementation, Conabio, Mexico; and Dr. Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias, Executive Secretary, Convention on Biological Diversity.
